Academics

Classical Studies of Indianapolis (CSIndy) is a Classical Christian Collaborative homeschool educational program rooted in the classical model of education. As a collaborative effort between instructors and parents, CSIndy provides content-rich supportive resources and curriculum that inspires a love of learning and stimulates the inquisitive mind and heart. We pursue academic excellence while building Christian character in a nurturing community.

What is Classical Education?

Classical Christian education focuses on the whole-person goal of education.  Not only does it sharpen the mind, but it also cultivates virtue and character in the lives of students and points them to Christ – the source of life and learning (Proverbs 2:6). If we only instruct for knowledge sake and forsake wisdom and moral character, we risk “producing” what C.S. Lewis called “a more clever devil.”

What makes classical education so effective? It is largely because of its approach to how and when students are taught. Regardless of their learning style, children learn in three phases or stages (grammar, logic/dialectic, and rhetoric), known in classical education as the trivium

Grammar Stage (grades K–6). Students are naturally adept at memorizing facts through songs, chants, and rhymes. If you can get children in this stage to sing or chant something, they will remember it for a lifetime.

Dialectic Stage (grades 7–8). Teenaged students are naturally more “argumentative” and begin to question authority and facts. They want to know the “why” of something—the logic or reason behind it. During this stage, students develop critical thinking skills and how to argue with wisdom, respect and decorum.

Rhetoric Stage (grades 9–12). This stage is naturally when students become more independent thinkers and communicators. They continue the study of logic and practice rhetoric, which is the art of persuasive speaking and debate as well as effective writing.

It is this approach to teaching students based on their developmental stage that makes classical education so very effective.  As Christian Classical learners we hold to the wisdom of scripture, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:6

Curriculum

CSIndy serves homeschool families with students in PreK through R12 (grade 12). Our core program provides a full day of in-person learning on Mondays for PreK-Dialectic 8 (8th grade) and Mondays and Wednesdays for Rhetoric 9 – Rhetoric 12 (grades 9-12).

We approach all aspects of the learning experience with Christ as our Cornerstone and we begin each day with devotions and prayer.  All of our classes are taught through the lens of a Biblical Worldview.

Our goal is to instruct each class in such a way as to allow each student an opportunity to excel in their God-given gifts.  We do this by providing:

  • Qualified Christian educators
  • Engaging classroom structure and curriculum
  • Supportive Christ-honoring community
  • Resource-rich programming to support homeschool families in the educational journey

Grammar Core

Our Grammar classes follow a four-year history cycle together studying what is good, beautiful and true in the integrated study of great works of literature, arts, music, Latin, history and science.

The Four-Year cycle of classical studies covers:

  • Year 1- The Ancients, BC 5000-400 AD
  • Year 2 – Medieval/Early Renaissance, 400-1600
  • Year 3 – Late Renaissance/Early Modern, 1600-1850
  • Year 4 – Modern Times, 1850-Present

Dialectic Core

Continuing with the strong foundation laid in the Grammar years, the Dialectic classes follow the history cycle with increased rigorous study in literature, arts, music, Latin, history and science.  During the Dialectic years, students develop critical thinking skills and learn how to discuss topics with wisdom, respect and decorum.

Elective Math Classes

  • Transitional Math (UG6 or D7) on Wednesday afternoons only
  • Pre-Algebra (D7 or D8) on Monday and Wednesday afternoons
  • Algebra 1 (D8 or R9) on Monday and Wednesday afternoons

Rhetoric Core

Taught on Monday and Wednesday mornings, students plumb the depths of American, British and Ancient literature and hone their composition skills. Engaging Socratic dialogues, they discuss American history and Western Civilization, Government, and Economics, Logic, Rhetoric, biblical worldview, theology, and more.

Senior Thesis

The senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. In completing the 15-page thesis, students bring all that they’ve learned—reading, researching, writing, and arguing—to bear on one issue of their choosing. They learn the background of the topic, analyze other people’s arguments, and synthesize their findings and discoveries, putting it all together to form a true, good, and beautiful whole. At the end of the year, they will orally defend their thesis before a panel of peers and instructors.

This year-long process teaches students project management, time management, valuable research skills, and the nuances of writing to inform and persuade; students are now ready to step into college, a career, and life.

Rhetoric Electives

On Monday and Wednesday afternoons, electives offer to help students meet academic and graduation requirements.  Typical offerings include Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Algebra I and II, and Pre-Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Anatomy & Physiology, and upper level Latin and Spanish. These classes are only available to students who are enrolled in the Rhetoric core classes and course offerings are dependent on enrollment each year.

Complete Scope & Sequence

Community Relationships are Cultivated at Every Stage

No matter the age or stage, learning is best done and is so much more enriching when done in a warm and vibrant community.  The Latin Club students attend and compete at the Indiana Junior Classical League convention every March, where friendships are built and top awards are won. The Rhetoric retreat kicks off the year and fosters friendships that grow over the course of the year.  The entire community, parents and students always look forward to Discovery Day in November, the Winter Dance in January, Dialectic and Rhetoric students perform an annual play in the spring and the Senior Thesis Breakfast and Graduation ceremony wrap up the year each May.
